Last week in the Start a Profitable Coaching Business Series we dove deep into How to EASILY Decide Who Your Ideal Client Is.

This week, we’re addressing a very common block that most new coaches have. That is, deciding what to call themselves.

“Should I call myself a business coach or a success strategist?”

You’d be amazed at how many hours are wasted trying to decide such a simple thing like a title. While I do somewhat understand the importance of it, I also know how obsessing over the perfect title can actually slow down your progress tremendously.

So today, I want to briefly talk about what to call yourself as a coach and choose your title once and for all.

To begin,  I just want to clarify something, there is a level of importance and connection to your title but that is certainly not a driving motivator for a client to convert and sign up for your programs. Which means that spending months trying to decide the perfect title is not a wise business decision (especially because you can always change it in the future if it pleases).

When it comes to picking your title I have a few main tips for you:

  1. You can use a little creativity but not too much, you don’t want potential clients to scratch their head trying to figure out what it is that you do
  2. It’s okay if there are more people calling themselves that, there are thousands of CEO’s on this planet and they don’t try to change their title because other people have it (so yes, calling yourself a coach when there are thousands of coaches is okay)
  3. Speak to your audience and let them know what you do, don’t just call yourself a coach, add a word or two that will help you narrow your title down (business coach, gut health magician, social media marketer, brand strategist)
  4. Listen to what feels exciting to YOU and don’t let all the noise confuse you
  5. Pick something and stick to it for a while, try it on, test it out, and if it fits, great. If it doesn’t, then you can always change it

I hope this was helpful and it motivates you to make this decision from a place of alignment with the permission to not get it perfect right away.

Stay tuned because next week, I’m answering the famous question of ‘do I need a website to get started as a coach?’.
