Being a new coach comes with its fair share of excitement and confusion. The beginning stages of a coaching business are equally filled with immense motivation and immeasurable fear. Not to mention the overwhelming confusion that gushes through every cell of your being the second that you make the conscious decision to start your coaching business.

It can definitely feel like a lot, especially if you’re trying to build everything from scratch and without personalized support by your side.

In an attempt to help you shed some of that ‘new coach stress’, I put together this blog post where I’m sharing with you my top 5 tips that all brand new coaches need to know.

After coaching dozens of women for the past 6+ years and helping them start wildly profitable coaching businesses, I’ve learned some of the most important things that all new coaches must be aware of if they want to keep their sanity as they build success.

So ready or not, here they come!

1. You don’t need to have an ideal client

The first advice that you’ll hear online is that you need to ‘figure out who your ideal client is’. I’m not a big fan of this piece of advice for new coaches. Here’s the thing, while picking an ideal client will help you tremendously in the future marketing of your coaching business, it can be extremely hard to pick a super detailed ideal client when you just don’t truly know who you enjoy working with (yet). My advice is to give yourself permission to test the waters, coach some people, see who you like working with, and then narrow down your ideal client. Don’t let this pressure-provoking piece of unrealistic advice stop you from moving forward and making sales.

2. Nothing that you create will be helpful unless you market it

Whether we’re talking about a website or a social media post, anything that you create for your coaching business will not be helpful until you actually market it and get it out into the world. A lot of new coaches spend months working on a website or a video or a blog post, not taking into consideration the time that it will take to actually market it. This is your friendly reminder to put just as much (if not more) time, energy, and attention into letting people know that your website, program, or content exists vs. spending all of your time just creating it.

3. Consumption is not execution

So many coaches will end feeling exhausted from ‘working so hard’ on their business and not seeing results. When asked what they have been working on, it’s easy to see how a lot of their energy has gone into consumption vs. execution. While learning is KEY at the beginning stages of your business, it simply can’t replace action taking. Results come from action so make sure you’re balancing your time in an effective manner and not just fill up your white space with doing courses.

4. Comparing yourself to people who have been coaching for years is the absolute worst

This is not only the worst form of self-deprecation that you can engage in but it is also a huge block to your success. When you compare yourself to other coaches who have been in business for way longer than you have, it’s like unfairly judging your running performance to a top athlete. It will leave you feeling deflated rather than motivated. The only person that you need to compare yourself to is yourself. Your journey is yours, own it!

5. The best investment you could make as a new coach is hiring a GREAT business coach

I had to put this one in here because new coaches often get stuck making the wrong investments. Yes, I do have to admit that oftentimes small courses or more affordable group coaching programs are less scary than a 1:1 coaching investment. However, more times than not, investing in the wrong type of support can leave you empty handed and disappointed in the lack of results. The truth is that as a new coach/entrepreneur you are going to need more handholding than you may think and that’s okay. The thing is that nothing will provide you with the level of customized support than a good 1:1 coaching relationship.

Some of these may feel pretty obvious while others may grant you permission that no one else has granted you before. As always, I want you to take what resonates with you the most and leave what doesn’t serve you.

Until next week!
