There will inevitably come a time in your business where life gets hard. You are fortunate enough to be a human being with a full spectrum of emotions and struggles that despite what social media often depicts, everyone experiences at some level or another.

Given the fact that you are not an emotionless, pre-programmed, robotic entrepreneur,  your personal life will encounter some difficult times that could or could not negatively impact your business tremendously.

Here’s the thing though, major life surprises are not the only thing that can impact your success. Even micro personal struggles can affect your business operations on a day-to-day basis. While a death of a loved one, an accident, illness, big move, or the birth of a child are examples of major life situations that will force you to show up differently as a business owner, the daily (and hard) micro struggles of life can take a massive hit on your performance as well.

When life is hard, it is harder to focus on your business – that is a fact.

Life being hard can also look like your kid not cooperating with you that day and fighting you back on every request, your seventh day in a row that you got into an argument with your partner over the same thing, or even that hormonal week of the month where you just feel like a total mess and can’t get yourself to wake up on time.

Life is hard on a macro and micro level and the more that you can accept that life being hard does not have to equal business being bad, the more that you can thrive in business despite the circumstances.

So how do you focus on your coaching business when life gets hard?

Well, it’s definitely not a 1-2-3 step process, but there are some foundations that will help you immensely if you’re having trouble executing and staying consistent in your business due to experiencing one of life’s harder moments.

1. Create systems, structure, and organization in your coaching business

Flying by the seat of your pants will only work for so long, trust me. This is coming from someone who preaches intuition and inspired-action all day long. The truth is that a business needs structure, you need systems and organization WHILE you also follow your gut and take unplanned action. I’m all for writing inspired posts, following your gut to apply to an unplanned opportunity, or changing directions when your soul is calling you to do so, but without the right systems in place that could crumble down fairly quickly. If all you do is follow your gut and do a little here and a little there when you feel called to do so, what happens that week that you got sick and literally have no emotional capacity to hone in to your intuition? You don’t show up, that’s what happens. What would happen instead if you had specific systems in place that allow you to operate your business whether you’re inspired or not? Well, you would operate your business despite the circumstances, right? It’s not about being rigid with systems and never following the adventures of your business, it’s about having a structure that will help you stay consistent even if you have a headache and can’t think straight that day.

2. Have negotiables and  non-negotiables tasks

You need negotiables and non-negotiables in your coaching business. Nothing teaches you more about your capacity than literally coming to a stage of your journey where you don’t have that much capacity. Like for example, moving across country or having a child. You physically, emotionally, and timewise don’t have the same capacity that you did before. This, however, doesn’t mean that your business needs to crumble into a black hole of failure. It just means that you need to be really aware as to what are the REVENUE-GENERATING tasks that you can’t negotiate in your business and which are the ones that you can. You can, for example, negotiate spending 5 hours a week creating prettier graphics, yet making content writing and marketing a non-negotiable to stick to. When life gets hard, stick to your non-negotiables.

3. Try really hard to always have a support system in place

Obviously. I’m going to start by saying to try really hard to always have a coach by your side or if you’re further along your business journey a mastermind to support you. That’s a given, I truly believe that coaching is THE best investment that you can make in your business and this belief gets even stronger when you’re getting in the way of your success, which often happens when life gets hard. This suggestion goes even further than business support though (although it is one of the most important pieces here), you also want to have a support system of friends, family members, and professionals that will help you move through this phase. A bestie that you can call when your relationship is turbulous or a therapist that you can go to when you’re feeling anxious. Building a business is hard, life is hard, and those who succeed are not doing it alone – I promise.

Most importantly, remember that you can thrive in business no matter what circumstances you’re experiencing. It may not always feel like a smooth sail but it is a sailing that you can undertake.
