I don’t think I have ever met a coach who doesn’t have the deep desire to work with dreamy, I-can’t-wait-to-get-on-our-coaching-calls clients. If you think about it, working with people you love is probably one of the reasons why you decided to start a coaching business in the first place (amongst many other things like flexibility, job security, and no income caps).

Technically, the first thing that new coaches want is clients.

The second thing they want is clients that actually  pay them well.

Third thing is clients who not only pay for their services with ease but also are a joy to work with.

The truth is that making money in your business is one thing but making money in your business WHILE you’re lit up with the human beings that you get to impact is a whole new game. Unfortunately, most people have experienced draining, flaky, ‘I don’t see the value’, ‘I’m not willing to do the work’ clients.

Which is why today I’m getting super real and talking about what it takes to attract clients you LOVE.

Be the client you wish you would attract

You’ve probably heard the Ghandi quote that says “be the change you wish to see”. Well, step number one towards working with clients you love is to BE the client you wish to work with. This expands into every area and every situation. You want your clients to move through the fear of investing in high-end coaching? Then invest in high-end coaching yourself. You want your clients to stop making excuses every time they show up to a coaching session? Stop making excuses in your own life and business. You want your clients to do uncomfortable things like quit sugar, pitch to a potential client, or apply to a new job? Then be courageous in your own life. Walk your talk all the darn time, because you can’t expect from others what you don’t expect from yourself.

Have clarity around what a client you love actually looks like

I want to clear something up that’s of utmost importance here. Working with clients you love does not mean your clients will be perfect. If they were perfect and had no flaws or problems, they wouldn’t be hiring you. It’s not about having an unrealistic expectation, it’s about knowing what your dream client requirements are. For example, my dream client requirement looks like this –

Barbara’s Dream  Client Requirements:

  • Values my time and hers which means that she shows up on time and ready for sessions
  • She’s willing to do the confidence AND strategic work required to grow a business, even if it may not always look like a straight line
  • She’s willing to laugh and have fun along the way because growing a business ain’t a faint undertaking
  • Values personal development and is willing to take responsibility for her thoughts, emotions, and actions

Do you see how that doesn’t translate to “she does everything we talk about in our sessions perfectly and never has a breakdown or difficult situation to navigate through”?

Market, market, and market some more!

You will kiss a couple of the wrong frogs through your journey of booking dreamy clients. That’s just part of the process and there’s nothing wrong with that. The third and super important piece here is to massively keep putting yourself out there. To find clients that you love working with, you have to expand your content, marketing, and visibility game like a pro.

Finding clients you love is an art, a science, but most importantly a practice. Whether you’re in the process of booking your first client or your first 10K client, remember this – you are worthy of massive compensation and divine work with clients you love. Make that your new mantra, follow these tips,  and don’t stop showing up for your strategic work.
